Day 4 of Durga Puja, also celebrated as the fourth day of Navratri, is dedicated to Maa Kushmanda, the fourth divine form of Goddess Durga. On this special day, devotees worship her for vitality, good health, and prosperity, invoking her radiant energy to dispel darkness and negativity from their lives.
Which Goddess Is Celebrated
On Day 4, the focus is on worshipping Goddess Kushmanda, whose name combines the Sanskrit words “Ku” (little), “Ushma” (energy), and “Anda” (cosmic egg), symbolizing her role as the creator of the universe. She is depicted with eight hands holding a lotus, kamandal (water pot), bow, and arrow on her right, and an amrit kalash (nectar pot), rosary, mace, and discus on her left, riding a lion and ruling over the Anahata (Heart) Chakra.
Story and Significance
According to sacred texts, when the universe was lost in darkness, it was Maa Kushmanda’s divine smile that filled it with light and gave birth to creation itself. She is considered the embodiment of creative power and life-giving energy, believed to reside in the core of the Sun and nurture all living beings with warmth and vitality. Special respect is paid to her on this day to drive away sorrow, depression, and fear, and to welcome growth, hope, and optimism.
Rituals and Puja Vidhi
- Rise early, preferably during Brahma Muhurta, and bathe before wearing yellow clothes, the auspicious color of the day.
- Clean and decorate the house with flowers and lamps.
- Arrange for puja items like vermillion, sandalwood paste, sacred thread, rice, yellow flowers, bangles, and a yellow saree or chunri for the goddess.
- Offer fruits, especially seasonal ones, along with Malpua as bhog, as well as meetha paan, supari, laung, and elaichi.
- Chant Durga Chalisa, and recite mantras and stutis devoted to Maa Kushmanda.

क्यों मनाते हैं यह दिन?
नवरात्रि के चौथे दिन माँ दुर्गा के कूष्मांडा स्वरूप की पूजा की जाती है। ‘कूष्मांडा’ शब्द तीन शब्दों से बना है – ‘कु’ (थोड़ा), ‘उष्मा’ (ऊर्जा/गरमाहट), ‘अंड’ (अंडा/ब्रह्माण्ड)। माना जाता है कि माँ कूष्मांडा ने अपनी मंद मुस्कान से सृष्टि का निर्माण किया और ब्रह्माण्ड में जीवन व प्रकाश फैलाया।

इस दिन माँ दुर्गा के कूष्मांडा अवतार का पूजन होता है। ये अष्टभुजा देवी (आठ भुजाओं वाली) कहलाती हैं, सिंह की सवारी करती हैं और उनके हाथों में कमंडल, धनुष, बाण, कमल, अमृत कलश, जप माला, गदा व चक्र होते हैं। माँ कूष्मांडा ह्रदय (अनाहत) चक्र की अधिष्ठात्री देवी भी मानी जाती हैं।
पूजा विधि, रंग और प्रसाद
- घर को साफ-सुथरा करके पीले फूलों, वस्त्रों और मिठाई से पूजा स्थल सजाएँ।
- माँ को पीला वस्त्र पहनाएँ, पीले फूल, फल (विशेषकर कुम्हड़ा/कद्दू) एवं हलवा, पूड़ी आदि का भोग लगाएँ।

कथा (Story)
प्राचीन मान्यता के अनुसार, जब ब्रह्माण्ड में न प्रकाश था, न जीवन, तब माँ कूष्मांडा ने मुस्कुराकर कुम्हड़ा (कद्दू) को उत्पन्न किया, जिससे ब्रह्मांड का निर्माण हुआ। इसी वजह से इन्हें ब्रह्मांड की सृष्टिकर्त्री व ‘कूष्मांडा’ कहा जाता है। इनके पूजन से मानसिक तनाव दूर होता है, सकारात्मक ऊर्जा और शक्ति मिलती है।
