DAY 1: NAVRATRI

Navratri and Durga Puja begin with Day 1, dedicated to worshipping Goddess Shailputri, the first form of Goddess Durga. This day marks the spiritual commencement of the festival with important rituals, stories, and mantras invoking divine blessings for purity, strength, and prosperity.

Day 1, or Pratipada, celebrates the arrival of Goddess Durga on earth and the beginning of Navratri/Navadurga worship. The day is devoted to Goddess Shailputri—“daughter of the mountains”—who is considered the purest form of Devi Parvati and the reincarnation of Sati. Shailputri symbolizes strength, resolve, and the foundational power of nature. She rides a bull (Nandi), holds a trident in her right hand, and a lotus in her left.

On this day, devotees worship Maa Shailputri, also known as Pratham Durga, Parvati, Sati, and Hemavati. She is depicted as the daughter of King Himavat (the Himalayas) and Queen Maina. Her divine association represents grounding and new beginnings.

  • The day begins with Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana, a ritual that invokes the goddess’s energy at home.
  • A clay pot with mud and nine different grains (navadhanya) is prepared, symbolizing progress and fertility.
  • A sacred Kalash is filled with water, Ganga Jal, coins, betel nut, and rice; five mango leaves are placed around its mouth, and a coconut is placed atop.
  • Devotees light a lamp (diya), offer incense, flowers, fruits, and sweets, and keep the lamp burning for all nine days to symbolize the goddess’s presence.
  • Wearing white is suggested, which represents purity and innocence.

Maa Shailputri’s story is rooted in the mythology of Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, who immolated herself due to her father’s insult. She was reborn as Parvati/Shailputri, the daughter of the Himalayas. After intense penance, she reunited with Lord Shiva as his consort. This day thus signifies penance, patience, and devotion, laying the spiritual foundation for Navratri.

  • Beej Mantra:
    “ॐ देवी शैलपुत्र्यै नमः॥”
    “Om Devi Shailputryai Namah”
  • General Puja Mantra:
    “वन्दे वाञ्छितलाभाय चन्द्रार्धकृतशेखराम्।
    वृषारूढां शूलधरां शैलपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्॥”
  • Stotra:
    “प्रथम दुर्गा त्वंहि भवसागरः तारणीम्।
    धन ऐश्वर्य दायिनी शैलपुत्री प्रणमाम्यहम्॥”

  • Celebration honors Maa Shailputri, the first of the nine forms of Durga.
  • Rituals include Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana), lighting a diya, and offering bhog (especially ghee).
  • Wearing white is considered auspicious.
  • The day’s theme is purity, strength, patience, and dedication.
  • Devotees chant dedicated mantras to seek the goddess’s blessing for peace, stability, and new beginnings in life.

Day 1 infuses the environment with devotion, spiritual intent, and auspiciousness, setting a sacred tone for the rest of the festival.
